founder of the movement in 1941 Viet Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam) in 1945 ferried the country to independence being acclaimed President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. He led North Vietnam, officially recognized in the Geneva Conference of 1954, during the Vietnam War until 1969, the year of his death. In the next
Geneva conference, Vietnam was recognized as an independent but was divided into two parts: the south (capitalist and pro-American) and north (and communist, at least initially, pro-Soviet). Ho Chi Minh became president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam in fact) in 1954 (in theory he had already declared president March 2, 1946, but this time was not internationally recognized).
