Enrico Berlinguer was born in Sassari May 25, 1922 by Mario Berlinguer (lawyer, socialist deputy) and Mary Lorimer. The family, belonging to the landed gentry of Sassari Masonic tradition, allowed him to grow up in a very culturally advanced (the grandfather, his namesake, was the founder of the newspaper "La Nuova Sardegna", and had been in contact with Garibaldi and Mazzini) and to take advantage of family relationships and policies that greatly influenced his ideology and political career later. Was a relative of Francesco Cossiga (their mothers were cousins \u200b\u200bto each other) - who was president of the Republic - and both were relatives of Antonio Segni, who is also head of state.
