The statues were blown up with dynamite in 2001 and destroyed by the Taliban, on the orders of leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, after the Taliban said they were "idols." International opinion strongly condemned the destruction of the Buddhas, which was seen as an example of intolerance of the culture and storia.Giappone and Switzerland, among others, have pledged to support the reconstruction of the statues.
